Description: Red-tailed tropicbird (Phaethon rubricauda) from Johnston Atoll.
Field Notes: Red-tailed tropicbirds need isolation and protection from humans, since they nest on the ground. Their gorgeous, slender red feathers were great esteemed in the old cultures for fancy head-dresses. Red has always been a sacred color in Polynesia.
