Terrain: mountainous islands of volcanic origin
Climate: tropical marine, with little seasonal temperature variation, but a great variation in rainfall due to topography.
Common Flora: Bamboo, mangroves, 20+ species of palms and many native and endemic Fiji species
Common Fauna: Birds: Orange and Goldern doves, lorikeets, parrotfinches; Bats: Monkey-faced fruitbats and Mastiff bats; Crested iguanas; Tree and ground frogs
Notes:

  • The interior mountains in many of the larger islands create a "rain-shadow" effect, causing the windward sides of the islands to get much more rain than the leeward sides. This creates a variety of habitats within a single island.
