Common Flora: Pandanus palms, bananas, coconut, frangipani and the Pacific banyan are common tree species. 179 species of plants and trees have been recorded, including the tomano tree, one of the few indigenous trees.
Common Fauna: Most land vertebrates are birds. A nightingale reed warbler, known as the Nauru canary, is native to the island. There are no native mammals, but rats, cats and mice were brought by European ships.
